One Million iPads Served [Online Advertising Firm Has Tracked Over 1 Million iPad Impressions, Doubled In Less Than A Month]

We reported on this earlier in the month, but online advertising network Chitika has been tracking the number of iPads that hit their websites. Like the AdMob phone numbers – it’s not a perfect system but it’s probably relatively accurate. Chitika gets 2 billion web impressions a month, and covers over 80,000 websites, so it’s fair to say that they have a fairly wide reach on this kind of thing.

Back on April 7, they had reported that just over 517,000 unique iPads had shown up on their ad network. Today, about three weeks later, that number has doubled to over 1,142,000 iPad tablets sold. Those are incredible numbers for anything in consumer electronics. Although Apple was coy about calling the iPad a “success” during their latest earnings call, I think it’s safe to say that they’re selling plenty of them.

Keep in mind that it’s sold 1.1 million units after roughly a month, and that’s before being released properly overseas and the 3G-connected model in the States. Although Apple historically usually sells worst in foreign markets and the 3G model carries a bit of a premium, those two factors will certainly add some more units sold.

Some interesting notes here, it looks like people are roaming around with their iPads – as Chitika is tracking that every unique iPad is connecting from, on average 2.7 different IP addresses. The speculation is that iPad owners are taking their fancy tablets to WiFi hotspots in shops, where ever.

The State of California is “iPad Central”, with Chitika reporting that 19.12% of iPads are ‘sighted’ in there. I don’t know if that’s based on GeoIP data or what.

Do you have an iPad? Do you want an iPad? WiFi or 3G?
