New Apple Multitouch Gesture Patent Granted [Additional Multitouch Gestures Set to Expanded Shortcuts for Touchscreens Such as Save As, Refresh, Restore & Print]
What with Apple having already hit today’s postings on account of Steve Jobs offering up an pretty frank open letter clearly stating his position concerning Adobe Flash we continue with news that Apple have just been granted a new patent relating to additional mulittouch gestures that’ll offer a host of shortcuts to touchscreen devices (such as the iPad and iPhone) that are presently lacking.

The new patent covers a veritable host of new mulittouch gestures that, notably, take in many of the shortcuts that offer the same functionalities as offered by mouse based (right click) menu shortcuts, such as cut, copy, paste but it doesn’t stop there with even left, right and centre button mouse clicks also being emulated.

The full set of new Apple mulittouch gestures can be see in the diagrams presented above and below and, as you’ll see, these new gesture based shortcuts take in a pretty wide range of commands, inclusive of search commands such as global search find, find next, find previous, editing commands such as text select, replace, global replace and navigational commands allowing for panning and next/previous app.

Interestingly, the new Apple mulittouch gestures not only utilise finger touch actions but also more sweeping spread hand gestures which would be especially suited to devices sporting larger touchscreens rather than more compact (thus relatively more restrictive) handset touchscreens so the emphasis here is evidently on bringing more intuitive gesture based command functions to Apple’s uber Touch (sorry, I mean Apple’s iPad).

One mulittouch gesture noticeably lacking, however, is one based on a mere flash of a users’ hand, but then, as we know, Apple aren’t particular fans of anything flash related.
