ATI Reveals New FirePro Cards
NVIDIA’s Quadro series of graphics cards has been pretty popular in the professional graphics segment, but ATI has their own offerings in that space with the FirePro cards. A few weeks ago, they introduced the FirePro V8800, which they claim beats the Quadro FX 3800 and takes the crown as ‘fastest professional graphics card’. Following up on that momentum, ATI has detailed five new FirePro cards.

The FirePro V7800 will be the new upper-mid-range card. It will be based on the consumer Radeon HD 5850 and will over 2GB of VRAM and have support for three 30-inch displays. Settling into the mid-range will be the FirePro V5800. It’ll only have 1GB of VRAM and the same three-monitor support, but ATI says it doubles the performance of their last similarly priced pro card.
Settling into the lower end of the new offerings will be the FirePro V4800 and FirePro V3800. The V4800 will have 1GB of VRAM and the V3800 will have 512MB. They should be appropriately priced at the entry level too. They’ll all have Eyefinity support for three-displays as well. None of these new cards have support for the Eyefinity6 six-monitor technology, it seems.
The last card, the FirePro 2460, is a touch different. It’s a low-profile card and has support for four-monitors, but looks like it will give up some performance. It’s being pushed for financial institutions who need to track financial derivatives or something. (insert topical comment on current financial crisis here)
The cards aren’t being sold separately yet it looks like, but manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo and HP are already including them in new enterprise computer orders.
