Mac OS X 10.7 App Store Not Happening; Or Apple Won’t Require Authorization for All Future Mac OS X Software

Steve Jobs Answers Vaguely to Developer Email About Future Mac OS X 10.7 App Store

Word on the street is that Apple is considering adding an App Store for its future Mac OS X 10.7. As the story goes, Apple has apparently signed up independent software vendors for the Mac OS X 10.7 developer program which is said to begin this fall.

That’s not such a bad thing considering how popular the App Store apps for iPhone, iPod touch an iPad have become in the last couple of years. What’s troublesome is that the future Mac OS X 10.7 is said to run only software approved and signed by Apple. We wouldn’t like anything like that, would we?

That’s why we’re lucky that one developer decided to send an email to Steve Jobs inquiring about the whole matter. Here’s what he wrote:

Hey Steve,

There’s a rumor saying there will be a Mac App Store and no software without authorization from Apple will run on Mac OS X. Is that true?

Well it looks like the guy has clearly not read some of Steve’s latest responses. The CEO doesn’t really have time to elaborate on answers so you can’t ask a question like that, can you? That’s not a clear question and can be interpreted in various ways by the person answering it. In this case Steve Jobs answered this:

Nope.

So did he want to say that no, there isn’t a Mac App Store? No, there is no authorization required for all future Mac OS X software? Or no, the whole rumor is not true, Apple is not working on a Mac OS X-based App Store in which case there won’t be any authorization required to run Mac OS X software.

So what do you say folks? Do we want to see Mac OS X grow an App Store of its own? Well with the iPad becoming more and more popular, maybe a Mac OS X App Store should be more than welcomed. That way, the second or third generation iPad could run a version of Mac OS X instead of iPhone OS 5.0 or 6.0. Not to mention the apps that could be created for the whole Mac OS X environment.
