Russians Disapprove Of Nokia N8 [Russian Nokia N8 Hands-On Preview Doesn't End Well, Calls Symbian^3 Cosmetic Only]

It’s not often that we comment on other site’s hands-on previews of devices here, but this one was pretty notable. The Nokia N8 (or N800, or N8-00, or N98 – the phone’s got a million rumored names) was looking like it could be Nokia’s killer phone of the year, but the device has gotten poor previews from a Russian website who got the phone early.

The Russian website liked the phone’s camera, they said it takes good still images, and as we’ve learned from the leaked shots of the device, it has a whopping 12-megapixel digital camera sensor. It also has got a nice huge screen (looks to me to be a 3.7-inch OLED, but this is conjecture), but again, the Russians found the hardware “underwhelming”.

As for Symbian^3, a lot of us were hoping that the new mobile OS would really be a big success for the Finish mobile giant – but the Russians were thoroughly unimpressed. The called the new OS simply a “cosmetic” upgrade over stock Symbian S60. They said the phone simply can’t live up to the experience you get on iPhone OS or Android.

The new Nokia N8 also reportedly does 720p video, but allegedly uses a proprietary “micro-HDMI” for the phone-side of the HDMI plug. This sounds very suspect to me, but if true, would be a huge pain if you had to use a Nokia cable for getting HD video off the phone.

Obviously, the phone to them was a huge disappointment. They’re posting genuine pictures of the device, which means they probably had enough time with the device to get a valid opinion – but you might want to wait until a more recognized website posts a review of the Nokia N8.
