CDMA Nexus One Shelved In Favor Of HTC Droid Incredible? [Google Phone Website Alludes To Verizon Nexus One Canned In Favor Of HTC's Droid Incredible]

A lot of people have been monitoring the Google.com/phone page today, with the recent announcement that Vodafone UK was going to start carrying the Nexus One. Vodafone and US-based Verizon Wireless were listed as getting the Nexus One “soon”. The Verizon Wireless section suggested users get the Motorola Droid if they couldn’t wait, but now, the Nexus One page is suggesting users instead just buy a HTC Droid Incredible.

Interestingly enough, Google seems to be going a different route with Vodafone. We touched on this a bit on the article covering the Vodafone-Nexus One news, but it looks like Nexus One buyers in England have (!) to buy the phone through Vodafone. Unlike T-Mobile US, it doesn’t look like you can buy the phone at all through the Google.com/phone portal. (I’m on an American IP though – those from within England could be redirected to the Vodafone site)

Anyway, back to the issue at hand, Verizon Wireless was long listed in the Nexus One’s “coming soon” section. But as us tech bloggers constantly refreshed the google.com/phone portal to see if something would change regarding the Vodafone announcement, the Verizon Wireless section was changed. It now reads:

For Verizon’s network, you can buy the Droid Incredible by HTC, a powerful Android phone and similarly feature-packed cousin of the Nexus One.

So, as aforementioned, that advert earlier told you that the CDMA Nexus One was coming soon, and encouraged Verizon users to get the Motorola Droid, it pretty much denies any possibility of a CDMA Nexus One, and instead tells you to pre-order the HTC Droid Incredible.

I don’t know if the CDMA Nexus One was “canceled” per se, or if they were never serious about releasing one. One reason that this development is so baffling/shocking is that we had some really strong rumors that the Nexus One was going to be launching on Verizon this month (example one, example two, example three). CDMA carrier customers are definitely better off Android-wise in the US anyway. While they may not get the Nexus One, they have/will get the Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Incredible and HTC EVO 4G.

EDIT: We contacted Google for comment, here’s what they had to say:

We won’t be selling a Nexus One with Verizon, and this is a reflection of the amazing innovation happening across the open Android ecosystem. Verizon Wireless customers who want an Android phone with the power of the Nexus One can get the Droid Incredible by HTC.
