Sony Quietly Adds 3D Support On PS3 [New PS3 v3.30 Firmware Adds Support For 3D Games, 3D Video, Break Out The Glasses]
Sony’s last firmware update (v3.21) was the controversial one that took away the OtherOS feature. Another one came out recently (v3.30) which adds the hotly anticipated feature of new options for sorting your trophies – as well as Sony quietly sneaking in support for 3D games and 3D video.

Avatar comes out today on home video, and for whatever reason I can’t help but feel like Sony’s timing is well placed. So this update isn’t adding back in support for the OtherOS feature, but it does enable users to play 3D games and 3D video on your PlayStation 3. Of course, you need a 3D HDTV to use it. (I’m sure Sony suggests their ultra-expensive 3D Bravias).
The changelog for the update says that it preps the PS3 for 3D gaming and goes on to say that 3D games will be out for the PS3 around the same time as the first 3D BRAVIAs. This would put the release of the first 3D games sometime around July.
As we covered here recently, despite the lack of content and high price, 3D TVs are selling well (enough, considering they’re new and expensive) which is shocking those in the industry.
Do you want a 3D TV? Are you going to 3D game on your PlayStation 3?
