Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein Gets Interviewed, Seems Positive & Optimistic [Jon Rubinstein; "Palm Can Survive As An Independent Company"]
Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein has been hot and heavy with interviews as of late, and the most recent was with the Financial Times. During the chat he covered topics such as being bought out, licensing webOS and future hardware but in the end he seemed to have a positive outlook. Lets dive right in with the positive and upbeat first, Rubinstein said he was “bullish” and stated pretty clearly that he believes “Palm can survive as an independent company.” Sounds good, albeit a little optimistic. Though he did go on to state that they had a plan that would get them to profitability.

As far as talks of an acquisition and licensing. Unfortunately, nothing much here that has not been said before. In this interview he stated that Palm would “consider a good offer if it came along” and that licensing would be an “interesting concept.” Of course, some will argue that is where Palm went wrong in the past. Well, one of the places anyway.
In terms of the exciting stuff — new hardware. It seems like we may still see something webOS related from Palm that is not a Pre or Pixi. According to Rubinstein, they are working “fast and furious on new handsets” and that they have a “strong pipeline of products in the future.”
And then we have what damage is being caused by all these buyout rumors, and how it may hurt things like developers, both current and potential. In this case, he noted that it was “clearly a concern.” With that I cannot help but remember the story from yesterday involving DataViz.
Personally, I like the “bullish” statement the best, that and the part where he said that Palm plans on “sticking around.” Of course, that is just the fanboy in me speaking. In the end, things look rough and its hard to say how this will all play out, one thing is for sure though, this is not the last we are going to hear about Palm in 2010.
