Linux iPhone Now Available on Video; Running Android or iPhone OS, You Choose

Dual-boot iPhone Now Offers Android & iPhone OS Support; Flash Said to be Included in the Future

After all the iPhone 4G commotion we’ve seen this week it’s now time to focus on a different endeavor. The phone below is an iPhone 3G that happens to run Linux on it. Well not any kind of Linux but Android, an OS that so many people grew to love in its short history.

And according to the hacker that made it all possible, the iPhone can run Android or iPhone OS which means you’d get to choose which mobile platform the device should boot.

As the video here clearly shows, Android is a possibility for iPhone users, not that you should be encouraged to modify Apple’s device in any way, especially if you’re not comfortable doing so.

The iPhone 3G in the video above is running iPhone OS initially, then it gets turned off and restarted. Given a choice to boot his regular iPhone OS version or to start a custom version of Android the creator chooses Android and we get to watch it all happen.

As you can see this Android-running iPhone 3G can surf the web, make/receive calls, send/receive SMS messages, listen to music, and probably lots of other cool things. There might not be enough buttons to make it all work, but it looks like there’s a way around that too.

Everything is functional even if it’s an “alpha build” for now. A more complex version will probably be made available soon and everyone bold enough to try Android on the iPhone will be able to do so. And who knows, maybe Flash will be available in the future too.

Naturally that means that you’d have to be comfortable messing with Steve Jobs’ baby and we all know how Apple hates that. Cupertino has even issued out a formal warning telling us that it doesn’t like having its handset jailbroken and unlocked, not that we imagined it any other way.

It would be interesting to see how Apple and Google feel about Android running on the iPhone. I am sure both giants have their reasons for not liking this particular venture but something tells me we’re going to see more Linux versions ported to the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4G later when it comes out. Maybe one of these two companies should give this guy a job!
