Google Gives Up On Nexus One Issues

Google Employee Says That They're No Longer Working On Nexus One's 3G Bugs

The Google Nexus One may be the best Android phone out there (for a short while longer, at least), but it’s had a few hardware issues regarding the 3G connectivity, and now Google is just giving up on trying to fix them. Their official solution? “Change your location.”

When the Nexus One was first launched with T-Mobile’s 3G bands, many users complained about poor connectivity. Google fixed those apparently in an OTA update, but it looks like they didn’t fix them for the AT&T 3G Nexus One, as users are still having issues connecting to AT&T’s 3G network (I think because it’s similar to the earlier T-Mobile problems, they know it’s not just AT&T’s questionable network).

Some users on Google’s forums were speculating that Google may roll out an OTA update for AT&T Nexus Ones. Google’s Ry Guy posted an unofficial (but official, because it’s the only response we’ve got out of the company on this matter) response:

Hey guys,

I’ve seen some recent speculation on this thread about an OTA to improve 3G connectivity and I want to give you an update on the situation.

While we are continuing to monitor user feedback regarding the 3G performance on the Nexus One, we are no longer investigating further engineering improvements at this time.

If you are still experiencing 3G issues, we recommend that you try changing your location or even the orientation of your phone, as this may help in areas with weaker coverage.

Definitely a poor workaround if we ever saw one. He didn’t even blame AT&T’s networks, which it almost sounds like could be the issue, but instead, he made it sound like they’re so busy they don’t have time to fix the AT&T-3G Nexus One.

It’s actually a bit of a shame to see Google respond this way. I’ve been holding up the Nexus One as the current best Android phone but this response is pretty discouraging. You’ve almost got to wonder if a proper mobile phone company (like Apple, RIM or HTC – if the Nexus One had been a purely HTC product) would respond in such a matter.
