Apple Announces Quarterly Earnings

Apple Has Sold Over 51 Million iPhones Total, 130% Growth Last Quarter

Although they have a knack for losing them in Redwood City beer gardens, Apple actually is selling a lot of iPhones. Their recent earnings call came out and they’re doing an incredible business with them hitting just about 52 million iPhones in all-time. The other businesses (computers, iPods) didn’t do bad, either, since Apple’s fiscal Q2 was the best non-holiday quarter in Apple history.

Apple sold 8.7 million iPhones last quarter. Compared to a year ago, they sold 3.79 million. That means they made a hefty sales boom of 130% growth, year-over-year. Pretty impressive.

Apple’s revenues totaled $13.5 billion this last quarter, with their net profit coming in at $3.07 billion. Their profit last quarter was a 90% increase from their Q2 last quarter.

Apple sold 2.94 million Mac computers in Q2, which was a 33% increase from this time last year (hopefully another sign of the recession turning around). They sold only 10.89 million iPods this quarter, which was a 1% drop. That could be a sign that more and more people are moving to iPhones (or other media-playing phones). It’s been long predicted that more and more people are going to abandon PMPs for more featured mobile phones.

Even with all this success, Apple predicts their earnings will drop a bit next quarter during the summer slowdown. Oppenheimer said that Apple will make about 1 to 5 billion less in revenue during Q3 FY 2010.  Still, not a bad horse to bet on.

None of the reporters or analysts on the conference call asked or mentioned the lost prototype iPhone 4. Apple surely didn’t mention it. Some opinions I’ve seen on the net say that Apple isn’t mentioning it because they’re afraid that if the general public knew that the next iPhone was coming, it might cannibalize the sales of the 3GS until then.

Of course, most plugged in tech-heads should know that new iPhones generally come around June-July. But mom and pop who wonder into an AT&T retail store might not know.
