Android OS 2.2 Froyo Testing Reportedly Underway

Google Begins Testing Android OS 2.2 Froyo, Expected To Be Released During Google I/O In May

Still waiting for Android OS 2.1, or even 2.0 for that matter? Yup, same here, I am still sporting a Droid Eris with Android OS 1.5. Of course, just because HTC and the individual carriers are slow to roll out updated versions of Android does not mean Google needs to sit still. And with that we are now seeing reports that Android OS 2.2, which has been dubbed as Froyo is currently in the testing phase.

The news is coming by way of the Android and Me blog who are reporting that “Google has already begun testing on their next firmware.” The information was discovered by way of analytic reports which show that visitors using Android 2.2 began showing up sometime after April 5th and have gone up and down since then. Of course, it should also be pointed out that these kinds of stats can be faked. That said, it was also noted that “additional sources familiar with the matter” confirmed that Android 2.2 is being tested.

Given those two being combined, it seems likely that 2.2 is in the wild, at least on a limited basis. So what can we expect in Android OS 2.2? Well, for the most part it is being described as an update that will be made up primarily of performance enhancements. A few items that are rumored as being included in Android 2.2 are a JIT compiler, additional free RAM and OpenGL ES 2.0 enhancements.

Additionally, it looks like we can also expect to see an FM radio get enabled, additional colors for trackball notifications, Flash 10.1 support as well as the problems with touchscreen glitches getting fixed.

As for when, so far nothing really, well nothing solid anyway. At this point the when is strictly just a rumor, however it was suggested that Google would officially unveil Android 2.2 during the Google I/O developer event which is scheduled to take place in San Francisco on May 19th and May 20th.
