AMD Six-Core Processors Released

AMD Phenom II X6s Are Cheap, Starting at $240, Not As Powerful As Intel Core i7-980X]

AMD has always been a low-cost alternative to Intel’s stuff and now the other processor company’s six-core processors are making an appearance on online retailers. They’re starting at $240, which makes them significantly cheaper than the Intel’s Core i7 series.

To quickly run down the prices, starting with the lowest. A Chinese website is selling the Phenom II X6 1055T for $214.  Going up, retailer Howard Technology, is selling that same chip for $240 while selling the 1090T for $350. Retailer Provantage is selling the 1090 for $318.

These are six-core processors that AMD is aiming at Intel’s six-core processors. AMD is hoping to regain some mindshare and marketshare in the enthusiast/gamer space. While Intel’s Core i7-980X will retain the top spot, processor-wise, it also costs a small fortune with a $999 MSRP with most retailers selling it for over $1,000.

PC World is reporting that with AMD selling their six-core processors at such a low cost, they may be making a small profit on each chip sold. A tech analyst told PC World that AMD is keeping prices low to stimulate demand and keep the chip fabs busy.

To recap the new chips, the AMD Phenom II X6 1055T is being reported as having a 2.8GHz clockspeed and 6MB of L3 Cache. The 1090T has a 3.2GHz clockspeed and 9MB of L3 Cache.

Although these chips are up for order, they may just be ‘pre-orders’. AMD hasn’t officially announced a release date for these chips, and when PC World asked after them, AMD told them they were still “unannounced” products.
