New XCOM Game Coming From 2K Games

2K Re-imagining Classic XCOM Strategy Series, But Will Instead Be Strategic FPS Game, XCOM Loyalists Upset

XCOM is one of the classic PC strategy games (known as UFO: Enemy Unknown in Europe) that has players defending against aliens from a turn-based isometric viewpoint. Many have clamored for a modern remark for years (with the original being released in 1994 – and not being CPU limited so a modern quad-core processor runs the game at 1 million frames per second), and now 2K Games is delivering… sort of.

In a press release today, 2K Marin, a development studio for Take-Two (one of the largest game publishers in the world) announced that they’re working on a XCOM remake and re-imagining. Instead of being a strategy game that has players carefully plotting and planning against aliens, it’ll be a FPS (first person shooter).

Yeah, you read that right. A classic turn-based (admittedly slow-paced) strategy game is being turned into a first person shooter. Not all is lost, though, 2K Marin promises that the game will be “strategic” and “suspense-filled”.

While the original game had you as the head of the XCOM agency tasked with protecting Earth from alien invaders (hence the reason why you were planning bases, managing funding), the upcoming shooter will apparently be completely unrelated as you’ll instead be an FBI agent fighting the alien invaders yourself.

Official statement from Christoph Hartmann, 2K President:

With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise. Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride.

Nothing on a release date for this new XCOM game, but it is currently in development. It’ll be coming to the Xbox 360 and PC. Are you excited for a new XCOM game?
