Rumor: Another New Atom Coming [Following On The Heels Of The D525 Rumor, Atom D425 Coming To Replace D410, Offering 1.8GHz For Your Netbook]

Just a few days ago, we reported on the rumor that Intel had a new Atom D525 processor coming soon . On the heels of that rumor comes more rumors of another new Intel Atom processor, the alleged D425. It’ll be a single-core processor that will replace the current D410 in Intel’s line up.

The report says that the pending D425 will be a single-core processor with a 1.8GHz clockspeed. It will have support for both DDR3 and DDR2 memory. Like our report on the rumored Atom D525 said, apparently netbook manufacturers have been wanting to get DDR3 memory into netbooks for some time but the lack of support on the Atom has limited them. Intel is obliging by including support for the faster memory.

The D425 will have a 512kb L3 cache, integrated graphics SoC and no turbo boost overclocking. Even though it’s got a higher clockspeed than the D410 (1.8GHz vs. 1.66Ghz), it will reportedly have the same power consumption, 10W TDP.

Website Fudzilla says that Intel has already begun manufacturing these chips and we should start seeing them ‘in the channel’ soon. Intel hasn’t announced anything (and they don’t comment on unannounced products). Fudzilla’s sources say that the netbook manufacturers were displeased with the first-gen Pine Trail D410 and D510 chips, so Intel hopes these will be more to their liking.

The netbook slowdown has sort of been a recurring theme to our netbook-related articles the past few days. Netbooks sales are really starting to drop off, and we’ve heard from within Intel that Atom sales are “really slow”. As I’ve written before, some have speculated that Intel (as a business) isn’t fond of selling Atom processors because they make such a small profit margin per processor.

Fudzilla reported that Intel has an even ‘faster’ Atom processor that they’re waiting to deploy (again, probably related to the netbook sales slowdown). These ‘faster’ Atom processors are set to be released around Q4 2010, according to Fudzilla. Sounds like we might have a new faster Atom processor just in time for a MeeGo device.
