GE Unveils New Omni-Directional LED Light Bulb

New GE Smart LED Light Bulb Built To Last 17 Years

GE has apparently solved the LED light bulb riddle, having developed a long-lasting, low-power LED bulb that emits light in all directions– not just one.  Until now, LED light bulbs shined light in a single direction, but the new GE Smart LED Light Bulbs shed light in the same fashion as a classic incandescent bulb or a compact fluorescent.

The advantage of LED light bulbs is their durability, long life span and efficient power consumption.  The new GE Smart LED Light Bulb sips power at 9W, where a comparable CFL bulb is at least 10W– and an incandescent bulb would consume 40W.  While the margin between the Smart LED bulb and a CFL may seem small, it’s the life span that is most noteworthy.  The durable GE Smart LED bulb will burn for 25,000 hours, which is three times longer than a CFL and and 25 times longer than an incandescent.  If the bulb is used for four hours per day, that light will shine for 17 years.

While technically progressive and environmentally friendly, the new GE Smart LED Light Bulb won’t come cheap.  You can expect to pay $40 or $50 at retail for one of these, due in stores in early 2011.  While that is considerably more costly than a CFL bulb, you’ll get three times the burn out of this one– and none of that nasty mercury to play with should the bulb break…
