Redbox Reportedly Considering A Movie Streaming Option

Netflix Could Face Some Competition If Redbox Follows Through On Movie Streaming Service

While Blockbuster was busy killing off the mom and pop video rental shops in most areas, and then later killing themselves off, other movie rental options came available. Most notably there is Netflix, however you also have the Redbox. For those unfamiliar with what a Redbox is, well for lack of a better description — it is a red box. But bad joke aside, a Redbox is a movie rental kiosk that can often be found in other retail locations such as 7-11, Walmart, CVS, Winn-Dixie, Sweetbay and more. According to the website they have over 20,000 locations. And maybe a little more important is that they offer movie rentals including new releases for as low as $1.

Anyway, according to a recent customer survey, Redbox may be preparing to offer a little more competition to Netflix in the form of a movie streaming service. Of course, it goes without saying that considering the availability of Netflix, Redbox has their work cut out for them should they decide to proceed.

Again, this information is being speculated based on a customer survey. As for what they asked, well, they were looking for customers to rate their interest in a streaming service. The best part, or at least the most interesting comes in regards to the price — $3.95 a month. And in addition to being able to stream an unlimited amount of titles for $3.95 a month, it was also said that those on the monthly plan would get four free kiosk rentals per month.

Sadly though, they did not mention which platforms would be offered. Are we talking computers or game consoles. Or maybe a separate set top box similar to what we have with Netflix and the Roku. Either way, in the end the $3.95 price tag may be a deciding factor for many, especially when you consider that is half the price of the lowest Netflix plan with unlimited streaming.
