New Atom Processor Revealed
There were a few reports around the net saying that due to the drop in netbook sales, Intel was going to withhold the next new Atom chips, but now we’re getting information on those chips from various websites. The new Atom chip will be dubbed the D525, and judging by Intel’s regular naming scheme, it’ll be a nettop chip.

The D525 is set to be released in Q2 2010. By the request of netbook manufacturers, it’ll have support for both DDR2 and DDR3 memory – which is allegedly something they’ve been asking for. It will have a higher clock speed than it’s counterpart, the D510, which has a 1.66GHz clockspeed, while the D525 will have a clockspeed of D510 of 1.8GHz.
The new TDP of the D525 is supposed to be the same as the D510, too, with both of them having a 13W TDP. All of their other specs are pretty similar, which leads to conclusions that they’re based on the same silicon. This would peg the D525 as a dual-core chip since the D510 is a dual-core Atom processor as well.
Obviously not a lot of people are going to get excited over a netbook processor – but with netbook sales decreasing, the whole market segment isn’t doing well. If this report is accurate, then it could mean that a turnaround is coming. Or at least Intel thinks one is coming.
Anyway, this information on this Intel Atom D525 isn’t coming from Intel – so I’ve contacted them regarding confirmation of the D525 chip. Stay tuned for updates. (Edit: Intel doesn’t speculate or comment on unannounced products, they say. Take it anyway you want it, regarding the D525).
Those interested in a D525 Nettop should be seeing them soon, as they’re allegedly set to drop in Q2 2010 (now until July).
