Microsoft Decides "It's Time To Share"

Microsoft's April 12 Special Event Rumored To Be Covering Project Pink

It looks like April may end up being a big month for mobile technology, at least in terms of announcements anyway. First we have the iPhone OS 4.0 unveiling coming from Apple on April 8 and then this latest, which is coming from Microsoft and scheduled to take place just a few days later on April 12, 2010.

The event from Microsoft is going to be (as you could have guessed) by invitation only. The nice part here is that those who received the invitation have already shared the tagline which simply read; “It’s Time To Share.” And then of course, both those who were invited along with everyone else have already begun to speculate. Personally, that is where the fun comes in.

As of now, most have suggested that this announcement will be in regards to Microsoft’s social networking based phones which up until this point have gone by the codename of Project Pink. And to take that one step further, Ina Fried from CNET is reported to have received confirmation that the announcement will be for two Project Pink phones which are codenamed Pure and Turtle.

Additionally, it looks like both handsets will be slider style phones featuring a keyboard and touchscreen display. That and, they are both heading to Verizon Wireless. In terms of availability, both are expected to be on sale “within the month following the event.”

In terms of what else we can expect, it looks like these phones are going to be along the lines of the Sidekick, except maybe a slightly updated version in that these will be more into Facebook and Twitter as opposed to messaging in general. Finally, for Zune fans, it is also being reported that these phones will be running Windows Mobile and featuring Zune software.

Of course, in the end, I suspect that many will still be waiting to see Windows Phone 7 later this year.

    1. Denkie says:

This launch sounds like a farce. Is Microsoft re-hashing the Danger Sidekick phones, with their Java development environment removed, to be replaced with some proprietary Microsoft platform?

For a start, the Danger phones are associated with one of the worst data losses in history. Microsoft should quietly brush these phones under the carpet, rather than promote them more, and remind us of the 2009 data failure.

What applications will these phones run? You’ve gotta have apps to be successful with smartphones.
