iPad Issues Already Appear; Some Units Not Charging Via USB

Users Report iPad Charging Issues on Windows PCs

While the iPad is definitely a game changer device that will deeply influence the way we’re looking at tablets, netbooks and even smartphones in the following years, that doesn’t mean it will satisfy our every need. We’ve covered the device extensively here at TFTS and you must surely remember what the most important problems with the device are: lack of multitasking and Flash support, lack of various ports and memory card and the lack of a webcam.

Sure these aren’t really reasons for not getting the device, especially for the average users that will use it as a second home computer for easy chores like email, instant messaging, web browsing and social networking.

The iPad is not perfect but that doesn’t mean you’re going to be wrong when deciding to buy one. No gadget out there will be able to meet our expectations as we’re always going to find flaws and issues with any device we invent.

Now, however, we’ve found a potential problem that might not sit well with early iPad adopters. According to some reports Windows PC users have failed to charge their iPad via USB. Mac users on the other hand have had no problem charging the device through the regular USB port of their Apple computers.

Of course you can always use the regular AC adapter to charge the iPad especially since Apple did warn everybody that such a thing might happen. It seems that the iPad’s power requirements exceed the capabilities of low-powered ports on some Windows machines. On the other hand the same machines could easily charge iPhones and iPod touches which require a lot less energy than the tablet.

Apple will probably address this matter in the future and maybe an upcoming firmware update will fix it altogether. In the mean time we’ll be waiting for your personal iPad stories. What are your first impressions so far? Do you love it or hate it?

I (non-iPad owner) hope Windows PC users with iPads, or iPad owners all together, understand that it is a computer, not just some not rink-a-dink device, and like all computers require power adapters or power supplies, so does this computer, with its large 25-watt hour lithium polymer. We should all try to power a laptop, or netbook at least, via USB 2.0. I just hope people aren’t so naive to think they could even charge this computer via 1.1 ports.

It seems that Mac outputs 500mA to USB devices while PC can output either 100mA OR 500mA.

I saw this issue concerning Blackberry charging on PCs being very slow compared to when they’re connected to Macs.

With the right driver, though, this problem can be easily solved. The driver orders the PC to output the full 500mA to the USB of the iPad and that should do the trick.
