Verizon iPhone 4G Confirmed as WSJ Reports CDMA iPhone 4G Set To Start Production
The Wall Street Journal is stirring the iPhone rumor pot today with two new Apple rumors for everyone to poke, prod, and ponder. The first rumor is the less tantalizing of the two with the Wall Street Journal predicting the launch the next generation iPhone 4G. Given Apple’s history of releasing an iPhone yearly since the smartphone’s launch in 2007, the fact that the Wall Street Journal is predicting another handset for 2010 is not surprising. As with previous generations, the iPhone 4G is expected to be manufactured by Hon Hai Precision. Also know as Foxconn, the Taiwanese manufacturer has a close relationship with Apple and has been involved in the production of both the Mac Mini and the iPod.

The Wall Street Journal also dropped the bomb that the second iPhone model under production will be headed to Verizon Wireless. According to people briefed on the matter, Apple is producing a CDMA iPhone that will be manufactured by Pegatron Industries, an operational unit of ASUSTeK. The CDMA iPhone is expected to enter mass production beginning in September with an unknown availability date. Given that time frame of production, it would not be unreasonable to expect a launch in late 2010, just in time to catch the lucrative holiday shopping season.
Lest you get your hopes up, this Verizon iPhone rumor has been floating around, literally, for years with no handset in sight. The latest Verizon iPhone rumor hit late last year with a CDMA iPhone expected to be announced alongside the iPad. That January 2010 event came and went with a nary a mention of an iPhone or Verizon Wireless. With WWDC slated for June 2010 and another chance at an announcement, the hope for a Verizon Wireless iPhone may be sprung anew. Is anyone going to jump on the “cautiously optimistic” bandwagon or have you been burned too many times in the past to fall sucker to this rumor again?
