TomTom XL & XXL GPS Models Now Come With Free Lifetime Map & Traffic Updates

Lifetime Maps & Traffic Updates Come To The TomTom XL & XXL Model GPS Units

TomTom seems to have both stepped up the competition in the GPS market, and at the same time cut off a possible revenue source. That move begins as of today and comes in the form of free lifetime maps and traffic updates on any of the TomTom branded GPS models in the XL or XXL lineups.

Details of this offer are simple, purchase a TomTom XL or XXL GPS and get the free lifetime updates. As for the maps, those are said to come every few months and should serve to keep you from running into roads that you see in front of you but not on your GPS. At least not very often anyway. As for those traffic updates, another nice perk and one that means you can hopefully avoid traffic during your travels. The traffic data is said to update every three minutes, at which time your routes are recalculated and you are given suggested alternate routes.

Officially listed, the XL and XXL model GPS units start at $199.95, however a quick check of the TomTom website has pricing as low as $159.95 for the XL 340-S and as high as $349.95 for the XXL 540-S World Traveler model.

Either way, with roughly a dozen models to choose from in the XL and XXL lineups, its likely they have at least one that will meet your GPS needs. Plus, in the case of the XL 340-S for $160 with free lifetime maps and traffic is a pretty nice deal. Just as a point of reference, other features that you can find of the XL 340-S include a 4.3-inch display, TomTom Map Share technology, a Help Me! menu, advanced lane guidance and text to speech. Additionally, any of the models in the XL and XXL lineup include features such as IQ Routes Technology and TomTom Map Share.

I just spoke to TOMTOM customer service at 1-866-486-6866 and they said that the model listed above (TOMTOM XL-340S) does NOT come with lifetime maps. According to TOMTOM, the XL-340M DOES come with lifetime maps. I bought a XL340S based off of this this review and it is UNTRUE and FALSE. Again, the XL-340S, per TOMTOM’s customers service today, November 02, 2010, this particular GPS does NOT come with lifetime maps. They were unwilling to give it to me either in order to keep me as a customer. Here I come, Garmin!
