Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Multitouch – In Short, Forget it

Xperia X10 Multitouch Upgrade Won't Happen Due to Hardware & Software Incompatibilities

We’ve offered pretty extensive coverage of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 on TFTS, back from when it was first outed, and amongst the X10 coverage we’ve brought you was confirmation that the X10 will receive an Android OS update subsequent to its release but, for those of you who where hoping that any such update would bring mulittouch capabilities to the X10 the news isn’t quite as palatable.

In short, if you’re looking for mulittouch to be added to the X10 by way of an upgrade (being that the Xperia X10 doesn’t offer mulittouch support out of the box) then you can forget it as, according to Sony Ericsson’s own blog, the X10 lacks not only the software capabilities to support mulittouch but also the hardware capabilities – the latter being of particular concern.

According to Rikard Skogberg who was answering questions posed by Joe Public on the Sony Ericsson Blog:

I don’t have any technical details around the screen to share, sorry! – However I have now gotten confirmation on the question of multi touch. As said earlier there’s no multitouch in X10 – and I also can confirm that it’s not only related to SW but also to HW. Despite this, for future updates of X10 we are of course working on other solutions for e.g. zooming, which has been requested frequently on this blog…

So that’s it folks, not only is there no mulittouch on the X10 but there never will be, or, rather, not in its present hardware iteration.

Of course, this isn’t as bad as it may initially sound as this doesn’t mean that you cannot use gestures (of sorts) with the X10 as the device utilises a hold-and-drag system that we used at SE’s MWC event earlier this year and, in honesty, it worked, and worked well (and you can see this in action in the video below).

But for those of you who simply must had a mulittouch phone – what with “mulittouch” being very much the in thing at the moment – this rules out the X10 and, in honesty, “hold-and-drag” just doesn’t have the same ring about it, does it?
