Boingo Updates iPhone/iPad App, Makes It Easier To Pay For Wi-Fi Access
Finding an available wireless hotspot does not seem to be as big of an issue as it once was. I would say that is most likely due to a few things, one being wireless hotspots are more prevalent, and two being that 3G access in smartphones and 3G cards has gotten cheaper and become more the norm. That said, some of those wireless hotspots will be locked down or only available for a price. Those for a price hotspots are often found at airports, as well as book stores and hotels and many of those locations are controlled by Boingo.

Putting aside the argument of free versus paid Wi-Fi for a moment. Boingo is making it easier for Apple users to connect to their hotspots on the go. This comes thanks to a recently updated iPhone/iPod touch and soon to be iPad app that is offering the ability to do in-app purchases.
The idea is simple, if you are in a Boingo wireless hotspot you can launch the app, pay for access and begin surfing. But the nicer part here comes in the form of the access you can buy — hint, its short blocks of access. The app will allow you to purchase 1 hour credits for $1.99 each. Not bad, now while sitting in the airport you can spend two bucks are surf the web for a while. And as and extra added bonus, Boingo will even give you some free access. According to the details, the first credit/hour is free.
As far as purchasing the access, like I mentioned, its in-app so that means the money you spend will be charged through your existing iTunes account.
Personally, I would say this does not make as much sense for me on the iPhone, well, assuming you have decent 3G. But on the iPad with Wi-Fi, or even the iPod touch this seems to be an awesome app. Especially for those that are often on the go finding themselves in airports.
