Toshiba UX600 HDTVs Revealed

New 1080p HDTVs Are Internet-Connected, ClearFrame Technology, Only 2-inches Thick

Toshiba quietly unveiled the new UX600 series of HDTVs on Monday. The new TVs carry a WiFi adapter and are Internet-connected for some IPTV functionality, but they’re also super-thin and offer full HD 1080p video. They’re offering three various sizes at various prices, both a bit on the high-end.

Toshiba is branding their IPTV connectivity on their TVs as “NET TV”, which will offer users access to services like VUDU, Pandora, and web apps like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and Picasa. It’ll also have an RSS reader feature as well as a customizable “ticket” that lets you scroll your own RSS stuff on the bottom of the TV screen like a ticker that you’d find on CNN or some other network.

Nothing groundbreaking there, we’ve seen that IPTV stuff built into TVs before, but VUDU is offering 1080p movies via their service which is nice. As mentioned earlier, the Toshiba UX600 series comes with a WiFi adapter built in as opposed to an Ethernet port as many Internet connected TVs will offer. They taut this as a feature with no need to buy a WiFi adapter although I’m partial to using wired Ethernet whenever possible (call me old-fashioned).

Oh yeah, the picture is pretty good too. The HDTVs will offer 3,000,000:1 contrast ratios and will use Toshiba’s ClearFrame 120MHz refresh rates. The TVs are only two-inches thick, too, which is fairly impressive. They’ll be offering them in three sizes, at 40-inches ($1,399), 46-inches ($1,699) and 55-inches ($2,499). All three models are set to go on sale this month.
