Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Coming To US? [Review X10 Units Being Sent To US Websites, Speculation Has Xperia X10 Going Stateside With Either T-Mobile or AT&T]
In my opinion, Sony Ericsson’s presence in the US market has definitely declined in the past 10 years or so, so I find it thrilling that rumors and speculation have plotted their new Android phone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 making an appearance in the United States. Several American blogs have received review units of the device and a slip of the tongue by a Sony executive may have confirmed it.

Sony Ericsson’s first Android phone, the Xperia X10 has gotten a lot of good reception before it’s release (not the least from our man Andrew who got his hands on it at a SE event) and now, SE has rightfully added Android 2.1 to the device before it’s launch. Android 1.6 (the original OS on the device) was current when they first unveiled the device, but since then, the Nexus One and Android 2.1 have stolen the show with it’s improved features. Thankfully, Sony Ericsson will ship the improved OS on the device.
As aforementioned, Sony Ericsson’s smartphone presence in the US has declined in recent years. A short survey of the websites of the major American cell service providers shows very few SE phones out in the states (AT&T – one, T-Mobile – one, Sprint – zero, Verizon Wireless – zero; that’s two Sony Ericsson phones currently out for purchase in the whole United States, folks). Is Sony Ericsson going to bring their Android Xperia X10 to the States?
There is some evidence to support that fact, despite nothing being currently announced. Some American websites have received review units of the Xperia X10, Gizmodo being one of them. But, surely these websites have a large international audience and they can’t be proof positive that the phone is coming to the US. But one slip of the tongue by a Sony exec may have given it away.
Speaking of Gizmodo, they recently had an interview with Sony exec George Bailey (we covered the interview here). During the interview, Bailey said:
Well, we’re kind of all about the new Sony Ericsson smartphone. I don’t actually know when it’s going to be launched in the U.S. It’s April 1st here in Japan and I think it’s about the same in the U.S. That smartphone is Android-based.
Interesting comments from Mr. Bailey. Speculation from pundits has put the Xperia X10 coming to the States with either AT&T or T-Mobile – which makes some sense since they’re the only ones currently offering SE phones. For Americans who want an Android alternative to the iPhone, a possible appearance by the Xperia X10 is definitely something to keep an eye on.
