Google Fiber Network Cities to be Decided Soon [Google Starts Choosing U.S. Cities for Its Own High-Speed Broadband Network; International Cities Envious Already]

I’m not exactly sure whether Google wants to have anything to do with the FCC’s National Broadband Plan but the company is already working on a ultra high-speed broadband network of its own. This isn’t the first time we hear that Google wants to offer us fast Internet speeds thanks to a powerful fiber network but it looks like Goog is ready to pick the first cities that are going to be part of the experiment.

And it looks like U.S. cities and local communities are more than interested in having Google rewire their homes. Google has received more than 1,100 community responses and more than 194,000 individual responses from people interested in helping the Mountain View-based company experiment the new ultra high-speed broadband networks.

Following the positive feedback it has received Google will be going through the responses in order to “determine where to build.” Once a decision has been made Google is ready to offer fast Internet access to 50,000 to 500,000 people during the experiment and if proven successful we might see Google offer broadband access to a lot more U.S. homes in the years to come.

In case you’re thinking about submitting your own application for having Google deploy a fast fiber-based network in your neighborhood then you’ll be sorry to hear that the deadline submission has passed and Google will choose from the apps it has received until now.

The map below shows you exactly where Google might be starting building its own networks soon. Every small dot represents a government response while every large dot represents an area in which at least 1,000 people submitted a nomination.

Unfortunately for international fans, Google won’t be able to extend its broadband plan outside the U.S. at least for now, but who knows; maybe on the long run Google will become even more powerful and thus capable of rethinking the worldwide Internet infrastructure. You know, in their complex plan of conquering the known universe!
