Untethered Jailbreak for the iPhone Demoed on Video [Untethered Jailbreak Possible on the Latest iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch, & Possibly the iPad, Tools for the Untethered Jailbreak Under Development]
Folks that own a new iPhone 3GS or a second or third generation iPod Touch should take notice of this short and sweet video released by George Hotz, iPhone hacker extraordinaire otherwise known as geohot. According to a post over at geohot’s blog, he has been able to crack open all of Apple’s latest iPhone OS-powered hardware with an untethered Jailbreak technique. The proof of concept is shown off in a 1:08 video starring geohot’s hands and an iPhone 3GS.

The untethered jailbreak will reportedly work with all Apple ihardware that is currently limited to a tethered jailbreak. Though a tethered jailbreak provides you with all the benefits of jailbreaking, it does require you to plugin/tether your device to your computer each and every time you have to perform a reset or your battery discharges completely. The first two times you do this, it may be enjoyable to get out your cable and plugin but by the time you have hit your 10th reset, you are ready to throw that iPhone or iPod Touch out the window.
The details on how this untethered jailbreak was achieved are yet-to-be released but geohot did confirm that it is a software-based solution and not a hardware solution so you don’t have to worry about taking apart your iPhone and performing some extensive soldering in order to jailbreak your phone. The new untethered jailbreak will also be as easy to perform as Blackra1n, which means even your four year old could do it.
Geohot also announced that he believes the method used to achieve this jailbreak will also work on the iPad. He does not explain why he believes this hack will work with the Apple tablet or how the exploit works, so we will have to take his word for it. Hopefully, it will pan out as being able to jailbreak your iPad on the same day that you get it would be sweet.
Last but not least, geohot admonishes his readers to wait patiently for the jailbreak as it will be released when it is good and ready. Let’s hope he bucks the conventional wisdom that suggests iPhone hackers wait until iPhone OS 3.2 rolls out to release their hacks. According to this philosophy, the next version of the iPhone OS is expected to drop soon and much time will be wasted in trying to jailbreak the current OS when a new one that undoubtedly will require a new jailbreak is right around the corner.
