HTC CEO Speaks, Considers The Nexus One A Success [All Issues Aside, Nexus One Is Said To Be "Doing Pretty Well" By HTC CEO Peter Chou]

From the outside looking in, it was easy to see some of the issues that seem to have plagued the Nexus One launch. Just a few that come to mind dealt with customer service, or more accurately the lack of customer service as well as sales that were lower than expected. Of course, many blame the low overall sales numbers on the fact that the Nexus One seems to be more of a geeks phone. In other words, the average customer who prefers to check out a phone in person is not as likely to pony up over $500 for a smartphone that have yet to see in person.

That said and despite the issues, HTC CEO Peter Chou has gone on record stating that he “thinks it has been an achievement” and that the Nexus One is “doing pretty well.” Those catchy and optimistic sounding quotes come courtesy of an interview that Peter Chou did during CTIA Wireless which is currently taking place in Las Vegas.

Additionally, during that interview, he commented on the analysts estimates which suggest that fewer than 150,000 units have been sold to date. That is where the doing pretty well portion came into play and in this instance I kind of agree. After all, the Nexus One is not widely available, and in reality this just makes me wonder how many more sales we could have seen if the phone launched with Google as well as in the carrier locations with a subsidy attached. Of course, Chou did not confirm any actual sales numbers.

Just for the record, the Nexus one is currently available (at full-price) for AT&T, Rogers and T-Mobile. It has also been announced for Verizon Wireless and Sprint, however as of this posting neither Verizon or Sprint have it for sale. As far as a subsidized offer, the only option is with T-Mobile, but even subsidized the phone has to be purchased through the Google phone store.

Moving on though, Chou also discussed how he feels that this will only help to improve the other Google phones coming from HTC. And he further went on to state that HTC “can quickly leverage that credit” to show that they are “the top Android brand.” Also, in addition to the Nexus One being deemed a success by HTC, it was also noted that Google was “satisfied” and were using the phone to “show how good Android can be.”

Hey, if nothing else it seems that if you want the full, as well as the latest and greatest Android experience than the Nexus One may be the way to go. Personally I have been using a Droid Eris, but thoughts of a Verizon branded Nexus One have me losing sleep as of late.
