Free Wi-Fi Comes to New York City But There’s a Catch

Time Warner Cable Offers Free Wi-Fi Hotspots in NYC for Its Road Runner Subscribers Only

I’m sure that free Wi-Fi is certainly something New Yorkers would love to have at hand at all times. With all the smartphones and laptops browsing the Internet in NYC alone one could take any break one could get. This time around it looks like Time Warner Cable is willing to offer you guys some free access to Wi-Fi hotspots in New York but, as always, there’s a catch when the word “free” is used.

Since nothing is really free out there, and you kids should be well aware of that by now, only “Road Runner high-speed online customers” will be granted free access to Time Warner Cable Wi-Fi zones within the NYC area.

That means that roughly one million Time Warner Cable customers will be available to enjoy the “fast and free wireless Internet connection at several locations in the NYC area” and yes, it’s all unlimited access.

In fact Time Warner Cable has gone ahead and partnered up with Cablevision. That way Time Warner Cable customers will have access to the Optimum Wi-Fi network from Cablevision while Cablevision customers will be able to take advantage of Time Warner Cable’s Wi-Fi zones through New York.

Howard Szarfarc, Executive Vice President of the company’s New York City Region had this to say about the free Wi-Fi offer:

Our sophisticated network is a combination of wireless and wireline services, bringing a wide spectrum of products and services to our customers. This free new Wi-Fi option adds another dimension for Road Runner customers, bringing even more convenience. Road Runner customers can experience a fast, simple and easy connection from their laptops or portable Wi-Fi-enabled devices in Time Warner Cable Wi-Fi zones, meeting their growing need for mobility.

And here’s a selection of Time Warner Cable Wi-Fi free zones which will be available to you in NYC starting today:

  • Eight commuter rail platforms on the Long Island Railroad Port Washington line: Woodside, Flushing Main Street, Murray Hill, Broadway, Auburndale, Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck;
  • Manhattan: Bryant Park, Madison Square Park and 79th Street Boat Basin;
  • Four parks in Queens: Bowne Park and Kissena Park in Flushing, Baisley Pond Park and Railroad Park in Jamaica.

In order to be granted access to any of them you’ll need to remember your RoadRunner ID and password so start memorizing them already! Of course, in case you are not a RoadRunner customer then this offer will be unavailable to you until you decide o become one.
