Sony Lowers The Pocket Reader Price, Now $169
The ebook reader space has been heating up. We now have several big players including the Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble nook, a few models in the Sony lineup and more that are being added almost daily. One of those models in the Sony lineup is the Pocket Reader and for and for a limited time you can purchase it at a $30 savings, which means you can pick one up for $169.99 instead of the normal $199.99.

For those unfamiliar with the Sony lineup of ebook readers, the Pocket Reader is the lower priced sibling of the Touch Edition and Daily Edition. The prices of those two models are normally $100 higher than the Pocket Reader, $299.99 and $399.99 respectively. Of course, the higher price also means they both come with more features than found on the Pocket Reader.
But at the same time that is not to say that Pocket Reader is suffering. Sure, it lacks a built-in 3G connection that will allow you to shop for and purchase books over-the-air but you can still purchase and transfer using a USB connection.
Otherwise, in terms of features the Pocket Reader has a 5-inch Vizplex display with an 800 x 600 resolution, 512MB of internal storage and can read ePub, PDF, BBeB Book, TXT, RTF and converted Microsoft Word files. Additionally, the Pocket Reader has a battery life of around 7,500 page turns for a BBeB Book file and 6,800 for an ePub book file.
Also included with the purchase is a USB cable (that you can use to transfer your books on and off) as well as a protective sleeve.
As of now the $169 price tag on the Pocket Reader will end on April 3, at which time it will go back up to $199. Considering the mission, which according to Sony’s president of digital reading Steve Haber, “is to expand digital reading to a larger audience by offering consumers the most access, choice and value,” it makes you wonder why the sale was only two weeks? Either way, a sale is a sale. Hopefully we will begin to see more ebooks come and go with sale pricing, and maybe in the future start seeing some permanent price cuts.
