Magellan eXplorist GC GPS For Geocachers Announced

Magellan Unveils Details On The eXplorist GC GPS, Geocachers Anxiously Wait Till Its April Release

Magellan has recently announced the eXplorist GC GPS receiver, and it was made with geocachers in mind. The eXplorist GC is a handheld style device that measures in at 2.2″ x 4.4″ x 1.4″ and weighs just 5.2 ounces. Additionally, the eXplorist GC is powered by two AA batteries that will be able to give you up to 18 hours of run time. Which sounds like plenty of time to search for treasures.

Feature wise the eXplorist GC will come sporting a 2.2-inch transflective screen that is said to be readable in direct sunlight, a multidirectional patch antenna and a SiRFstarIII GPS receiver that promises to acquire a reading in 20 seconds (hot), 60 seconds (cold) and is accurate up to 3 meters.

Other features of the eXplorist GC include the device coming pre-loaded with “easy to navigate menus and rich graphics,” the ability to store up to 10,000 geocache locations, geocache awards, a picture viewer, suspend mode and a trip odometer. All in all the eXplorist GC is being touted as a device that will allow for complete paperless geocaching. The paperless geocaching is made possible by offering more than 20 unique characteristics of each cache on the device. You can also and view, search and filter your results directly on the device.

In addition to the hardware, those who purchase the GPS will get a 30 day premium membership to the Geocaching.com website. The free trial membership will allow you to download GPX files, create your own Pocket Queries, organize cache listings, create a favorites list, filter cache types using Google Maps and more. After the 30 day trial membership ends you can either continue on as a premium member for $30 a year, $10 for 3 months or drop down to a free basic membership.

Finally, the device is rugged and waterproof to IPX-7 standards so you can worry a little less about damage while in the field. The Magellan eXplorist GC will begin shipping in April and can be purchased for $199.99.
