Sprint Motorola i1 Android PTT Phone Unveiled [Motorola i1 Push-to-Talk Smartphone Heading to Sprint in Summer 2010]
Motorola and Sprint have officially unveiled plans to release the i1 smartphone. And as you may have noticed from the image, the i1 comes sporting a rugged design which means it meets military specifications in terms of protection against dust, shock, vibration and blowing rain. The i1 is also noted as being the world’s first Android powered smartphone that is push-to-talk capable.

Aside from being a rugged designed PTT capable smartphone, the i1 comes packing a pretty complete set of goodies both in terms of features and support for media and services. The Motorola i1 will feature a 3.1-inch HVGA (320 x 480) touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, a 5-megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash, a microSD card slot, headphone jack and a 1400mAh battery. The camera also offers geo-tagging and panoramic capabilities as well as the ability to record video. Additionally, the i1 will ship with a 2GB microSD card.
The one drawback here comes in terms of the version of Android. The i1 was noted as having Android 1.5, which as anyone that closely follows Android will point out, 1.5 is quickly becoming outdated. On the positive side, the i1 will come complete with the full set of Google apps including Gmail, Google Maps and Google Talk. You can also expect to have Opera Mini 5 installed and set as the default browser as well as the Swype virtual keyboard. Two nice additions over the default options.
Moving on, the i1 offers support for your corporate or other POP3 email account as well as SMS and MMS messages. In terms of media playback, you can expect support for MP3, WAV, WMA, WMV, MIDI and MP4 audio files as well as H.263, H.264 and WMV video files.
As of now the pricing and a specific release date has not been announced. Instead the release information was left as being available “in the summer of 2010.”
