Apple Adds “Gift This App” Option In App Store [Gift This App Option Makes It Easier To Give Away an iPhone App]
Perhaps looking for another way to allow users to easily spend money in the App Store, Apple has added the ability to “Gift This App.” The new gifting ability comes in the form of a simple drop down, and also means that people will now have a good reason to buy favorite apps twice as opposed to once. Well, twice if they are feeling generous.

This new functionality does come with a few limitations however, most important is that you must stay within your App Store. In other words, if you are a US App Store customer you will only be able to gift an app to another US App Store customer. Other details that are made known in the fine print of the terms and conditions include that you cannot gift any in-app purchases, iPod touch OS updates and in certain cases you may need to modify your parental control settings in order to receive the app.
Otherwise, it seems like the app gifting is going to work just like we have seen with the music gifting. To begin with, the first time you gift you will have to agree to a new terms and conditions. Then once that formality is taken care of you can simply choose the app you want to gift and enter your name, the email address of the person receiving the app and a brief message.
The email address is key in this process, and it is best to use (if you know) the email address that the person you are gifting uses for iTunes. After all, these apps are tied to an account, which is based on an email address.
This Gift This App feature does come with one big unknown, that as of now has not been answered. What happens if you gift an app and the recipient already has that app?
Anyway, all in all this seems to be a smooth and easy process. If nothing else it is certainly a nicer option that we had in the past — order an iTunes gift certificate, which often caused an issue because they are only available in $10 increments. Not a good way to give away a $0.99 app.
