HTC HD2 Confirmed to be Upgradeable to Windows Phone 7… NOT!

Who cares about the iPad today? While those of you that did pre-order Apple’s tablet are still neither idiots nor fools in my book, I have something equally hot to focus on these days. You might have guessed it already, it’s Micrsoft’s Windows Phone 7 mobile platform which is ready to sweep us off our feet.

Since we’re just about to talk about related hardware, specs and features I might just go ahead and give you the good/bad news: the HTC HD2 won’t be upgraded to Windows Phone 7, not now, not ever, and Microsoft is the one that said so.

Why is it bad news? Well I don’t have to explain this one, will I? I bet carriers around the world are crawling on their knees begging for Microsoft to let the HTC HD2 receive the Windows Phone 7 update. Especially T-Mobile USA! And in case they don’t then I’m sure that current HTC HD2 users are surely doing it.

Why is it good news? Well wouldn’t you want to buy the next-gen HTC HD2 which HTC is surely going to design with Windows Phone 7 in mind? I’m sure that’s a more than pleasant thought for the mind. And I’m also sure that HTC will want to make such a phone for us which we hope it won’t infringe on any patents of the enemy.

The HTC HD2 is officially said to be “not compliant with the Windows Phone 7 Series hardware specifications” although I am pretty sure that there’s a way of making everything all work quite nicely even if it won’t be officially endorsed by Steve Ballmer & Co.

Microsoft talked more Windows Phone 7 handset specs and features at MIX today. What did we learn? Here’s the “consistent set of hardware capabilities defined by Microsoft:”

• One resolution at launch
• Second resolution added later
• Same touch input
• Consistent processor / CPU
• Same available RAM
• Optional keyboard.

Say what? Is Redmond serious? Well it is surely not joking! Although these specs and features sound pretty much like what we’ve heard at MWC 2010 it’s not giving us much insight into the actual hardware of the future Windows Phone 7 handsets. And it will surely make us wonder how an OS that supports the same “touch input and available RAM” and comes with a consistent CPU can’t run on the HTC HD2. I know, it’s those damn extra buttons!
