Apple Sold 90,000 iPads in 6 Hours [Apple Makes $54 Million in Its First iPad Pre-Order Day, Doesn’t Care About iPad Haters]

Remember folks, these are unconfirmed numbers but it looks like Apple has managed to sell over 90,000 iPad units in the first day alone. In fact you’ll notice that this report covers only a quarter of the first day of iPad pre-orders and the estimated sales amount to $54 million. Naturally these numbers haven’t been confirmed by Apple so far but we can only assume that iPad sales are going as planned if not better.

Apple iPad dollars

So how did people count the numbers of iPads sold? We already told you since yesterday that Apple sold 50,000 units in the first two hours but true Apple fans found a way to measure Apple’s sales performance through the day. The APPL Sanity Board at Investor Village arranged sales in a spreadsheet and managed to come up with an average number of iPads sold through the Apple Online Store.

The only problem with these estimates is that everyone is assuming that the order numbers are sequential. In case Apple decided to give random order numbers to its iPad customers in order to prevent bloggers from actually guessing the number of iPads sold then the estimates will have no value.

The order number also don’t account for multiple iPad sales or for in-store pick-ups, which don’t get order numbers. Therefore we can assume that that Apple has sold even more iPads in day one than we actually expected. Of course if the order number is indeed sequential but also includes other products in the Apple Online Store, as it should be logical, then the number of iPads sold should be slightly lower than estimated.

We will definitely be waiting for Apple to brag with iPad sales and I am sure they will do just that if everything goes according to plan. Unlike Amazon or Palm, two companies that never mentioned the number of Kindle or Palm Pre sold at various points in time, Apple has always bragged with numbers. That’s spectacular! Phenomenal I might add! In what way? Well in convincing others to buy the iPad, since, you know, customers are like cattle sometimes. We will just go in the same direction everyone is going even if the grass might be greener on the other side.

How many iPads have you pre-ordered already?

    There aren’t any in-store pickups for the iPad yet as they won’t be delivered until April 3 and need a pre-order number anyway.

    It does seem likely that their order numbers would include other products.

      @Andrys, there is the option of choosing in-store pick-ups when pre-ordering. In such a case you won’t be given an order number.

        @Chris,
        That is bizarre. Pre-orders usually get numbers and it’s normally just an option whether you want shipping or you’ll pick it up.

        I guess this is saying there is no priority by order # in that case.

        By-date is not as good as an identifying number. Or, maybe they’re tracking reserved-for-pick-up #’s?

        I read that some are wanted to go reserve one and pay for it. Too odd they would not call that an order.

    I’m sure these are all bogus numbers designed to deceive consumers and the market. Nobody really cares about the iPad period. Everyone I’ve spoken to don’t think they’ll be buying or want an iPad. Call the majority of college students haters or even business users haters..but the facts show up clearly in the polls: iPad is not practical or appealing to the majority of consumers. It’s just not worth carrying around an oversized iPhone when the iPhone or even a Palm Pre, Android mobile device is sufficient enough to get what you need done.

    I am a traveling Salesman and the iPad is perfect to replace my Macbook while gone every week!! The pictures I have to show my customers of our products are terrific. I use Numbers and Pages as well as E-Mail and loading photos on iPad. I also read books and use the iPad to watch downloaded movies on Hotel TV’s. All I need is Quicken for iPad and my Macbook will retire.

    Great Machine Mr Jobs. Thank You!
