ASUS Reports Poor Motherboard Sales In Europe [Motherboard Sales Down In Europe, The End of Homebuilt Desktops?]

ASUS is probably one of the more premiere motherboard producers for computer enthusiasts. Unfortunately for them, they’ve had to cut regional motherboard shipments to retailers in Europe has demand for their boards has dropped. According to market watchers, ASUS has cut its supply to Europe by roughly 150,000 units.

ASUS recently had a large display at the CeBIT German trade show. They showed off a lot of products in their ROG (Republic of Gamers) line which is basically factory overclocked parts. They also had a few “record setting” products that set new benchmarking records. We reported on their overclocked Radeon HD 5970 with a three-slot tall cooler. ASUS is generally a pretty solid brand for parts when building your own computer in terms of quality and selection.

ASUS’ European motherboard shipments are down from 1.9 million units to 1.75 million units for the quarter. Gigabyte will reportedly be shipping 1.7 million units in the same time frame, while MSI will be bring up the rear with only 700,000 units.

ASUS didn’t have any comment on the supply slowdown, and didn’t even confirm it (Edit: ASUS has confirmed the sales slowdown in a press release) – as it was reported by industry watchdogs. It’s reportedly due to ‘slow demand’ which means people aren’t buying motherboards. It could slow sales due to the economy and this time of year – or it could be the long prophesied end of the desktop.

ASUS’ motherboards range from $50 Pentium-capable motherboards to $400 Core i7-capable ROG cutting edge motherboards.
