Zune HD2 with Windows Phone 7 OS Coming from Microsoft? [Zune Phone in the Making Without Actual Phone Capabilities: Zune HD2 Running Windows Phone 7 Version]

I am really trying to understand Redmond’s intentions on this one. What does Microsoft really want to do with a Zune HD2 running Windows Phone 7? Hint, hint: it’s not the Zune Phone which we’ve been hearing so much about in the past.

zune hd2

The Zune HD2 is going to be to Windows Phone 7 handsets what the iPod touch is to the iPhone. The only problem here is that Microsoft seems not to want to risk it all and make its own Zune Phone. That way the Zune HD2 would indeed be to the Zune what the iPod touch versions are to the iPhone.

You’ve got to ask yourselves if such a product has what it takes to be successful. By raise of hands, how many of you own Zune HD media players and how many of you have iPods (iPod touch included)?

Microsoft has failed to beat Apple in the music business and so far it is failing to beat it in the mobile business too. I definitely am willing to give Windows Phone 7 a lot of credit and I do see it as the major mobile OS the market needed. But a Zune HD2 running on Windows Phone 7 version that’s stripped of all calling capabilities sounds pretty wild.

I bet Microsoft is relying on a very important factor here. While the Zune HD is a not that popular but pretty dependable media player, the Zune HD2 could be a very popular portable gaming device since it will be running Windows Phone 7. We talked about Windows Phone 7 support for XNA Game Studio 4.0 earlier here on TFTS, a feature that basically will let you play the same games on Windows PCs, Xbox 360 consoles and Windows Phone 7-powered devices. That’s how the Zune HD2 could bring in some cash for Microsoft. But why not buy an actual, working, Windows Phone 7 handset instead of a Zune HD2? They will both support Xbox 360 games!

So let’s hear it from Zune HD and iPod touch users then! Would you be interested in a Zune HD2 media player or not?

    I don’t understand what the confusion is…

Why wouldn’t Microoft consolidate the OS between Zune and Windows Phone? Doesn’t it make perfect sense to have a single developement platform?

Apple did the same thing with iPod Touch and iPhone OS.

Essentially these devices are the same experience with slightly different hardware options. If you care about making phone calls and being connected all the time get an iPhone or Windows Phone. If you only care about music, movies, and games, get an iPod Touch or Zune.

I would buy a ZuneHD 2, if it has 800×480 screen. Why? Well, I don’t wanted to pay extra $30/month on data plan, and if I do used it for internet, I most likely will be at home or work where I already has wifi. When I sit on the bus, I like to read books, play a little bit of games, or watch videos.

I like to have a phone that work as a phone, and nothing else. I like a phone that work when I am stuck in an emergency and not try to figuring why the phone is crashing or the battery only last a day.

This will be Microsoft’s 4th attempt at a music player.

    1. PlaysForSure – FAILED
    2. Zune – FAILED
    3. Zune HD – FAILED
    4. Zune HD2 – ???

People should stop wasting their money on Microsoft platforms that fail time and time again.

@Amanda M,you can’t say that the Zune and Zune HD have failed. For those that own one they come to see that they are dependable. I had my zune 4G for 4 years without a problem. Then I got the HD and gave my zune to my brother…which still works. The Zune is much more dependable. Now on the front of apps and some other things there is room for improvement. So the Zunes didn’t over-whelming suceed but you have to be technology deficient to say that they fail.

if they make a zune hd 2 they to make more apps

The device actually sounds really good, it’s running windows 7 (do I hear horrible battery life?) and If I’m not mistaken, windows 7 can rund windows 6 and 6.5 apps, and if so that opens the door to over 70,000 apps! So that is less ccathing up M$ needs to do. Then again I find it very cold how they just straight up ditch the original zune HD users…. and to think I was going to buy one a couple f weeks ago,

I can’t wait until the Zune HD comes out!! I already have a phone that I am decently pleased with. I am dying for Windows Phone 7 platform, but I simply just do not want to pay for an expensive voice and 3G plan and being stuck for another 2 years. The only 3G plan I am getting in the near future will be for a tablet because the plans cost the same but tablets are much faster and have much more advanced displays. Smartphones are so last years. Welcome to the new age of tablets and Windows 7 Phones.

I would buy one if they get tons of new apps lol I’m using my iPod touch I used to have a zune 30 and it lasted 4 years lol

I have a Zune HD and love it. the interface is exceptional, I like its style better than the ipod. I do really want a win7 phone but one thing will keep me from getting it, I do not want a pricey data plan, for me its just not worth the extra cool factor. People sell the zune short who have not used it. some of the stuff apple does it dosnt sure, but what it does do, it is vary polished at. once people grow familiar with “the 7″ you may see zune sales also pull up for those with envy but aversion to data plans

data plans are an easy way to get people to pay far more money than they would up front. they say “I got this phone for $99!” but in reality they are paying close to the price of a fast laptop. a smartphone is useless without its plan.

if zune goes 128meg it will be a strong competitor.

meanwhile my long seeded disdain for itunes will keep me away from i-anything. (itunes has always seemed like the lamest media player option, but being standard issue and advertising carries it along). Any way to get the iphone hardware to run win7? hahaha

To be fair, i do have gripes -I do wish it would naively handle FLAC. Oh, and calc needs to come up faster then ten seconds, that is redonkulious!

HELLLS YEAH! it could be displaying 1080p videos with the same crappy ie8

The new Zune Hd2 with Windows Phone 7 Platform would either be what takes Zune to a full spot next to Apple in terms of “multi-media” or it will still please the numerous amount of Microsoft fans(me included) because they continually try and try to improve what they do for their customers. If you don’t like the Zune don’t hate just do your own thang.. I am a Zune fan and I respect Apple(except for the confinement of Itunes.)

  • Chris

Microsoft would be stupid not to market this phone, its stylish and it does everything anybody really needs… who really needs all those apps when your on the road. Not me!!!

  • That Guy

I’ve had my zune hd for a long time and it has never broken glitched or failed to open anything(i even have quite a few third party games on it)it always works and has a very good battery life.
I also have zune pass and downloading an album only takes about 45 seconds to a minute and it is very easy to use.

So i say BRING IT ON MICROSOFT! I WANT MORE ZUNE BILL!!!! BRING ME MOWWWRRE!!!!!

    @Amanda M

    Failed at what?

Zune is a great device and not being number one doesn’t change that. Would you say that a mac PC failed just because it is not number 1?

  • Troupe426

I already have a zune hd so i wonder if there would be a way to change the os making some minor interior changes so i could have win phone 7 based os housed in an original zune hd?

  • Harold t

i love the zune hd. very dependable and very smooth. easy to use and less of a hassel to deal with hacks or glitches. the zune is better than the ipod. but trust me they will make more apps. they have alot of money. microsoft doiminates for computers and music. all apple has is phones.
