Boeing Unveils New, Compact and Energy Efficient 3D Camera

Boeing's 3D Camera Consumes 10% Of The Power Of Standard 3D Cameras

Boeing Directed Energy Systems and their subsidiary Spectrolab has unveiled a new 3D camera for military and commercial applications.  The new Boeing 3D camera is one-third the size of standard 3D cameras and consumes only one-tenth the power, providing for a compact and efficient imaging solution for the behemoths of might and industry.

The new Boeing 3D camera system has been targeted specifically at military applications, including the installation into unmanned aerial vehicles and ground support units where space comes at a premium.  The third visual dimension it will provide can help its users map terrain, locate targets and see through foliage that 2D cameras cannot.  It does so with advanced 3D image sensors that were created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory, housed in a compact cube unit that is one-third the size of standard 3D cameras.

Presently, the Spectrolab-sourced Boeing 3D camera is only capable of still imaging, but 3D video modes are on the way.  The system is presently ready to be installed in UAVs and other units, having completed tests in mobile ground platforms and a Boeing AH-6 Little Bird helicopter.  Consumers may not see such a compact, power-sipping 3D camera for some time, but not many consumers own UAVs, so that shouldn’t be an issue…
