O2 iPhone Tariff Update Hints that iPhone 4G will Sport Front Facing Camera [O2 Includes ‘Cost for Video Calls’ in Tariffs, Hints at iPhone 4G Video Conferencing Feature?]

We’ve offered you a heads up here on TFTS previously concerning (more than just) rumours that the new iPhone 4G will come with a front facing camera, allowing for video conferencing (see: iPhone 4G Front-Facing Camera Confirmed by Apple Patent?) and now, to fuel speculation further following video calling being covered in the latest iPhone SDK (specifically SDK 3.2), O2 have acted to update their tariffs to include the cost of video calling which is widely being read as O2 acting to lay the foundations now ready for the release of the new iPhone 4G.

iPhone 4G Video Calling

Listing pricing for UK video calls, which, interestingly, considering the bandwidth required, come in at the same rate as voice calls have initially been listed incorrectly, see below for a statement just passed directly to TFTS from O2,  (you can see this new tariff on O2’s website (view “view charges outside your allowance” – though we’ve pictured the new tariffs below for you as well) aside from serving to potentially indicate that the network is prepping itself for the iPhone 4G also serves to underpin the networks confidence concerning its data network though its not as if video calling hasn’t been on offer for a while now, with the vast majority of smartphones featuring front facing cameras, but its fair to say that it was never truly embraced by consumers (I’ve owned several phones offering this capability and I only ever used it once – really just to see it working – and never touched it again).

O2 New Voice Calling Tariff revised

Update – An O2 spokesperson has just contacted us concerning the video calling tariff with the following statement:

“The iPhone section of our website states video calling is charged at the same price as voice calls. We can confirm that this was listed in error. We will be amending our website shortly to clarify this.”

(We note, with great interest, and we suspect you do too, that there’s no mention in our contact from O2 concerning the voice calling tariff refuting that the new voice calling tariff is indeed paving the way for the iPhone 4G – so make of that what you will).

Of course, Apple are yet to officially confirm anything concerning the up and coming new iteration of the iPhone but what with SDK 3.2 and, seemingly, networks such as O2 laying the foundations for what may prove to be a new age of video calling, few would bet against the 4G iPhone offering this functionality.
