Google Buys DocVerse Threatening Microsoft’s Office Supremacy

Google to Improve Google Docs Thanks to DocVerse’s Acquisition; the Ball in Ballmer’s Court

When talking about cloud computing, something that most computer OS manufacturers will be heading to, one must also consider adding all the productivity applications customers needs to that cloud. Google is certainly thinking about that especially since it’s preparing to unleash Chrome OS later this year.

In their quest of conquering the Internet first and then the world, the Mountain View based company has acquired a new company called DocVerse. That’s “a small and nimble team of talented developers who share [their] vision, and they’ve enabled true collaboration right within Microsoft Office.”

In other words people will be able to use “traditional” Microsoft Office desktop application in a web-based environment in which instant collaboration on various documents is possible thanks to Google’s DocVerse integration in its Google Docs app.

If you happen to be one of DocVerse’s customers they you can keep using the software but anyone else that wants to sign up for the service is going to have to wait for Google to make the appropriate changes to its Google Docs universe. Does this mean we’ll have to pay to use these new Docs features?

So now it’s up to Microsoft to dazzle us with Office cloud support. Steve Ballmer did speak about the importance of cloud computing and we’ll be interesting to see what his answer to Google’s DocVerse acquisition is. We will only note that, again, Microsoft is getting ready to face the competition later than anticipated. Google’s Google Docs app has been around for a long while now and it’s a more than useful productivity cloud-based application.

We’ve been keeping close tabs on Google’s recent moves and it will only be interesting to see where the company is heading to, particularly when it comes to computer OS and cloud computing. And we’ll expect Apple and Microsoft to catch up as fast as possible when it comes to cloud computing and cloud-based apps since this is where the future is surely headed.
