Cheap Coby NBPC722 Netbook Costs Only $85

Cheap Netbook Features 3G Connection, Marvell Processor, Windows CE, 2GB of Flash Memory

While the CeBIT trade show in Germany may be winding down today, that hasn’t stopped news from coming out of Hanover. At the Coby Electronics booth, a new ultra-cheap netbook dubbed the NBPC722 was spied, with the low MSRP of only $85.

Coby was rumored to be making a sub-$100 last fall but after several blogs reported the story, Coby issued a press release saying very firmly that they weren’t. But now, five months later, we’ve got this NBPC722 netbook with an ample amount of screen bezel. It will have a 7-inch screen but seems to be using the regular micro-laptop keyboard standard used by netbooks (aka 10-inches) so hence the bezel.

The NBPC722 will come with a SIM slot for a 3G internet connection, so you could call it a certain copyrighted word that combines smartphone and netbook. For processing power, it’s got a Marvell PXA303 processor that clocks in at 624MHz. No word on how much RAM (probably 1GB or less, we estimate) but it will have 2GB of flash storage.

It will be running Windows CE, which is about the only version of Windows you can get installed on 2GB of memory these days. The hardware specs should be enough for non-video web pages and e-mail writing. Tech blog Engadget who got their hands on the $85 netbook reported that there even was a YouTube shortcut on the desktop, which leads everybody to believe that it can run YouTube videos well enough.

Expect the Coby NBPC722 netbook to debut in North America this spring for $85.
