Volkswagen Polo GTI Debuts in Geneva [New Polo GTI Comes With Twincharged 1.4 TSI Engines, Sports 180PS]

At this year’s Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, Volkswagen have officially launched their new Polo GTI to the world. Slated as the most economical and the safest Polo to day, the new model loses the 1.8 TSI or 2.0 TSI engines in favor of a smaller, but more powerful, twincharged 1.4 TSI that churns out nothing less than 178 hp @ 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 249Nm (184 lb-ft) between 2,000 rpm and 4,500 rpm.

So how does that perform when in race mod? Apparently the new Polo GTI goes naught to 100km/h in just 6.9 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 229 km/h. And all these happen while it still delivers a rather low 5.9 litres per 100km (47.8 mpg imp / 39.8 mpg US) fuel consumption and 139g/km of CO2 emissions.

Fitted with ESP, ABS, anti-slip regulation (ASR), front passenger airbags and head-thorax side airbags, the new Volkswagen Polo GTI borrows the XDS system from the Golf GTI to improve handling by reducing understeering, and uses a McPherson front suspension and semi-independent rear suspension combination.

Other features include LED daytime running lights, corner marker lights, cornering lights, bi-xenon headlights, an electrically operated panoramic tilt/slide sunroof and dual chrome tailpipes.

Like what you’re seeing, the new VW Polo GTI should begin selling this May in Germany, with other European countries and Japan following suit.
