Gigabyte Shows Off 890GX Mainboard
Yesterday, we covered MSI’s new motherboard which used AMD’s new 890GX chipset, and now Gigabyte has followed suite by having theirs on display at CeBIT. The 890GX is AMD’s latest chipset and it’s coveted by AMD faithful right now because of its support for AMD’s newest six-core processors, as well as their inclusion of USB 3.0 and SATA3.

As aforementioned, the new Gigabyte motherboard (officially named GA-890GPA-UD3H) will feature a AM3 processor socket and will have support for the upcoming Thuban six-core processors (although it’s worth mentioning that AMD will be patching in support for the Thuban chips into some older chipsets via a BIOS update).
For RAM, the Gigabyte motherboard will support dual-channel DDR3 at 1866MHz. While Gigabyte doesn’t promise the “military-grade” capacitors that MSI did yesterday, Gigabyte has included “industry-leading” materials when they built the PCB board. They’ve gone with NEC’s solution for a USB 3.0 controller, which promises a transfer rate of 5Gbps. They’ve also promised 3-times USB power delivery to charge your USB gadgets faster.
The AMD southbridge 850 chipset is providing support for SATA3 hard drive connectivity. For graphics, like all the 890GX mainboards, it’s got the ATI Radeon 4290 graphics, and I’m presuming that it will have the HDMI-DVI ports integrated like the MSI one from yesterday.
While this Gigabyte motherboard doesn’t have MSI’s “OC Genie” easy overclocking feature, it does have Gigabyte’s “Precision OV”. Precision OV is more for the experienced overclocker than the idiot-proof OC Genie as Precision OV will allow more precise control (hence the name) over your chip voltages.
It’ll be decently affordable with a listed price of only €110 ($150). Without knowing the price of the MSI board, the differences in the overclocking features could be the deciding factory for many buyers.
