Intel showed off a new computer in their Classmate line of reference computers. The new Classmate will be a 10.1-inch netbook that features a convertible screen so it can fold back and be used like a tablet. It will be aimed at emerging markets and will compete against the likes of the OLPC.

Like all of their learning series computers, Intel just declares the reference spec and various OEM manufacturers produce and sell the computers – and this is apparently what Intel is going to do with this new Classmate tablet/notebook. Intel didn’t offer detailed specs on this computer, instead giving us bullet points.
It’ll run an unknown Intel Atom processor and will have a focus on low-power consumption. It will have a 10.1-inch screen resolution. For connectivity, the device will have WiFi, 3G, GPS or WiMax. I’m not sure why school children in emerging countries need GPS, but why not?
The new design is supposed to be oriented for “small hands” and is supposed to fit in easily in workspaces that you’ll find in schools. The keyboard, screen and touchpad are all-water resistant. The keyboard is covered with an anti-microbial coating, and the whole thing is scratch and shock resistant.
Intel promises 8.5 hours of battery life. No word on how much this will cost – it probably is up between Intel and the OEM, but this thing doesn’t look cheap. It doesn’t look like it will be a competitor to the OLPC in terms of price.
