Intel’s new Atom processor was officially (sort of, more on this later) today in a press release. However, this might come as a shock to some since the processor has already been included in the specs for some upcoming netbooks (like the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t). Today, though, Intel officially uncovered the new chip.

The new Intel Atom N470 will be from the Pine Trail line, which allows for lower power consumption and also has the graphics processing done on the same die as the CPU (but it isn’t much of an improvement). Although Intel didn’t announce the TDP with the press release today, the naming convention leads us to believe that the N470 will be a netbook-style processor versus the more power-hungry processors for nettops.
The N470 will have a clockspeed of 1.83GHz and will have 512kb of L2 cache. It will be optimized for DDR-667 memory, which is pretty standard on netbooks these days. No other information on the new processor has been revealed yet.
The reveal was done via Intel’s “Chip Shots” PR blog. Intel’s press release was dated “March 1st”, so their blog posting could of been a bit premature. Intel says that “major OEM partners” have signed on to use the new N470 in netbooks, but declined to name them.
We know for a fact that Lenovo and Toshiba will be using the chips (because they listed new netbooks with the N470 already), but you can expect other netbook manufacturers to show off their N470-packing netbooks next week at the CeBIT show in Germany.
