Android 2.1 Update Coming to All U.S. Android Smartphones [Unconfirmed Android 2.1 Upgrade Expected to Hit All U.S. Handsets in the Following Months]
In case you’re based in the U.S. and own an Android device we have some good news for you. Well, in all honesty it’s unconfirmed good news so far since we’re still waiting for an official point of view on the matter. Android 2.1 is rumored to hit all Android smartphones in the USA in the following months which means you won’t have to ditch your “old” Android device in order to take advantage of the features found in Android 2.1.

The Android 2.1 update will arrive in the upcoming months and you might have to wipe your phone before actually upgrading to the new firmware version, not that wiping your device will be a problem. All you have to remember is to make sure you backup your contacts, pictures and any other files you might have stored on your Android handset. After that you’ll be good to go for the update and you’ll probably have a nice set of detailed instructions on how to complete the whole process yourself without bricking the phone.
Google hasn’t made any official comments on the matter yet but since it’s only the weekend we’re not that surprised. After all we’re also waiting for Google to announce the Verizon-bound Nexus One which we’ve seen earlier so the following weeks could reveal more details about Google’s Android intentions for the immediate future.
It’s being reported that carriers and handset makers are working together to determine how they should go about this upgrade business as there are two alternatives available, over the air or through a tethered PC client. The later one seems to be the safer way to go although there aren’t any official announcements from any of the big Android smartphone makers at this time.
The first handsets to get the firmware update will be apparently the G1 and the myTouch 3G but eventually all Android phones operating within the USA will get the all new Android 2.1, including the Motorola Droid, whose Android 2.1 update has been pending for a while now.
