PlanetSolar Is World's Largest Solar-Powered Boat

Sleek Catamaran Unveiled in Germany, Is Powered by 5,382 sq ft Solar Panels

For those wondering what’s the largest solar-powered boat in the world, we have the answer, the PlanetSolar. A modern ark for today’s Noah, this sleek catamaran-styled yacht measures 102 feet long, almost 50 feet wide and 24-1/2 feet high (31 meters by 15 meters by 7.5 meters), but its most interesting feature is that it’s covered with 5,382 sq ft (500 sqm) of solar panels that gather sunlight and help it sail the sea nice and smooth.

Built by Knierim Yachtbau and designed by PlanetSolar SA of Switzerland, the world’s largest solar boat has a futuristic shape that gets the eye. The vessel has been unveiled for the first time during a press event held at the HDW shipyard in Kiel just yesterday, with an official unveiling slated for April this year.

Jules Verne had already predicted that one day man would be capable of destroying everything or saving everything. An exhaustion of our fossil energy resources and a climate imbalance due to using them are forcing us to give our society a rethink.

Paradoxically, this situation is an opportunity for our civilisation. Using technology and our knowledge to improve our energy efficiency and promote renewable energies is the path towards a lasting world.

PlanetSolar wants to show that we can change, that solutions exist and that it isn’t too late. Future generations are looking to us; our choices will mark the future of humanity.

We’re having our fingers crossed for the actual launch of the PlanetSolar, as we’re hearing it should set sail for the first time, sometime next year. If anyone cares, guys, we’re in for an around-the-world journey!
