Nintendo Wii Drought Expected To Continue Through March

Nintendo Fighting To Refill Stock After Holiday Sales Surge

If you’re not an owner of a Nintendo Wii, getting one now may be nearly as difficult as it was to find one upon the gaming console’s initial release.  Nintendo of North America chief Reggie Fils-Aimé stated that production of the Nintendo Wii console may not match demand until late March.

The Nintendo Wii console sold a record 3.8 million units in December, the most video game consoles sold in a single month by any video game console manufacturer.  These record sales led to supply issues for Nintendo, who has pushed production to try to meet demand but is still a month away from catching up.  Until then, Fils-Aimé says, the Nintendo Wii drought will continue.

It has been suggested that the record sales of Nintendo Wii consoles in December led to a temporary increase in market share for XBOX 360 and Sony PS3 systems, as Wii sales dropped due to these supply issues.  When Nintendo catches up with demand by the end of March, the competitive market share against the Wii should likely recede to near 2009 levels.
