AMD Bringing New Quad-Core Processors [New X4 640 and 645 Processors To Take AMD's Top Spot, 3.1GHz Top Clockspeed, Still 45nm Manufacturing]
Reports on the internet say that AMD is planning to release a new pair of processors which will take the top high-end spot in their line of Athlon II X4 quad-core processors. The upcoming chips, dubbed the 640 and 645 will feature clockspeeds in excess of 3.0GHz.

The new chips will use the Propus chips. The current high-end Propus chip is the Athlon II X4 635, which clocks at 2.9Ghz, but Fudzilla is reporting that in Q2 2010, that’ll be surpassed by the new Athlon II X4 640, which will offer a slightly higher clockspeed at 3.0GHz. Likewise, later in the year in Q3 2010, they’ll introduce yet another higher chip, the Athlon II X4 645.
The X4 645 will have a slightly higher clockspeed than the ones before it, with 3.1GHz. Both the 640 and 645 will have similar stats. They’ll be natively cacheless and will have a TDP of 95W. They’ll have a total of 2MB of cache, with no L3 cache and will thankfully have DDR3 support. The new chips will use AMD’s AM3 socket type.
Fudzilla is reporting that these new chips will manufactured with the 45nm die. AMD, unfortunately, unlike Intel, doesn’t have the capacity to manufacture in 32nm yet (expect AMD to come out with 32nm chips next year). No word on pricing yet for the X4 640 and X4 645. The current X4 635 goes for around $120, so expect the X4 640 and X4 645 to be increasingly more expensive.
